Frequently Asked Questions

The Rongai route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. This side of the mountain is significantly drier and receives much less rainfall than the southern slopes. This makes it an excellent choice for climbing during the wetter months (April, May, and November) when other routes can be muddy and have lower visibility.

Yes, Rongai is considered one of the easier routes. The ascent is more gradual and less physically demanding than on routes like Machame. However, the acclimatization profile is not as ideal as on the longer routes. For this reason, we strongly recommend the 7-day itinerary, which includes an extra day to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Rongai offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro. You'll experience a true wilderness feel on the quieter northern slopes, with a chance to see wildlife like colobus monkeys. The views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are stunning. The descent is via the Marangu route on the southern side, so you get to see a different side of the mountain on your way down.

Rongai is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro. If you value solitude and a more remote trekking experience, this is an excellent choice. You will see far fewer climbers during the first few days of your ascent compared to the popular southern routes. The descent along the Marangu trail will be busier.

The 7-day itinerary includes an extra day for acclimatization. This day is spent hiking from Mawenzi Tarn towards the Kibo saddle and back. This "climb high, sleep low" approach is crucial for helping your body adapt to the altitude and significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit successfully and feeling better while doing it.

Unlike other routes that may descend on the same path, Rongai ascends from the north and descends via the Marangu route on the southeast side. This means you get to experience two different sides of the mountain. The final two nights of the trek are at Kibo Hut and Horombo Hut, which are part of the Marangu trail infrastructure.
