Frequently Asked Questions

Lemosho offers a true panoramic journey around Kilimanjaro. It starts on the quiet, remote western side, taking you through lush rainforest where you might see wildlife. It then crosses the vast, stunning Shira Plateau and joins the southern circuit to offer iconic views of the Barranco Wall and the summit glaciers. This variety of landscapes makes it a favorite for photographers.

The high success rate is due to its excellent acclimatization profile. The longer itineraries (7 and especially 8 days) allow for a gradual ascent. The route naturally incorporates the "climb high, sleep low" principle, particularly on the day you trek to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m). This gives your body the best possible chance to adapt to the altitude.

Both are excellent for acclimatization. The 8-day version breaks up a long day of hiking into two shorter days, usually by adding a night at Karanga Camp before the final ascent to Barafu Camp. This provides more rest before summit night and is our most highly recommended option for maximizing your chances of success and enjoyment. The 7-day option is still great but combines two of the shorter days into one longer one.

The first few days on the Lemosho route are very quiet and remote, offering a true wilderness experience. On day 3 or 4, the Lemosho route merges with the more popular Machame route. From this point on (at Barranco Camp), you can expect to see more climbers on the trail and at the campsites.

The Barranco Wall is a famous and exciting part of the trek. While it looks intimidating, it is not a technical rock climb and does not require any special equipment. It's a 1.5-hour scramble where you will use your hands and feet to navigate the rock face. Our guides are experts at leading climbers up the wall safely. Most people find it to be a fun and memorable challenge.

While Lemosho is not a technical climb, it is a strenuous, multi-day high-altitude trek. The best training is hiking, especially on hills or mountains, for several hours at a time. You should have a good level of cardiovascular fitness. Strength training for your legs and core is also very beneficial. The most important thing is to go slowly ("pole pole") to let your body acclimatize.
