Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Packages — The Classic "Coca-Cola" Route

Our Marangu route packages are perfect for climbers who prefer the comfort of sleeping in mountain huts over camping. Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, it is the oldest and most established path on Kilimanjaro. While its shorter duration presents an acclimatization challenge, it offers a direct and scenic journey to the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Marangu is considered one of the easier routes due to its gradual slope and hut accommodations, its shorter duration (especially the 5-day version) makes acclimatization more challenging. This leads to a lower success rate compared to longer routes like Lemosho. We highly recommend the 6-day option for a better chance at reaching the summit.

The huts on the Marangu route (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo) offer basic, dormitory-style sleeping arrangements with bunk beds and mattresses. You will still need to bring your own sleeping bag. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washroom facilities. While more comfortable than camping, they can be busy during peak season.

The main reason for the lower success rate is the shorter acclimatization period. The 5-day itinerary, in particular, involves a rapid ascent which can increase the risk of altitude sickness. The principle of "climb high, sleep low" is not as effectively applied as on routes like Machame or Lemosho. Opting for the 6-day version with an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut significantly improves your chances.

Yes, it is highly recommended. Since the Marangu route has a limited number of beds in its huts, it can get fully booked, especially during the peak climbing seasons (January-March and June-October). We advise booking at least 3-6 months in advance to secure your spot.

The Marangu route is beautiful, passing through rainforest and moorland with great views of Mawenzi peak. However, because you ascend and descend on the same trail, the scenery is less varied than on routes like Lemosho or Machame, which traverse different sides of the mountain.

On the 6-day itinerary, you spend an extra day and night at Horombo Hut (3,720m). This day is used for a short acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Peak (e.g., to Zebra Rocks) before returning to the hut. This "climb high, sleep low" practice is vital for helping your body adjust to the altitude before you push higher to Kibo Hut and the summit.
