Frequently Asked Questions

Machame hits the sweet spot for many climbers. It offers fantastic scenery, a high success rate due to its good acclimatization profile, and is more budget-friendly than Lemosho. Its popularity means the trail is well-established. It's a challenging and rewarding camping route that captures the full Kilimanjaro experience.

The 7-day version adds an extra day of acclimatization by splitting a longer day into two. You would hike from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to spend the night, and then proceed to Barafu Camp the next day. This extra rest at altitude significantly increases the success rate and is highly recommended. The 6-day version is more strenuous as it combines these two days into one long trek from Barranco to Barafu.

Machame is considered a difficult but not technical trek. It involves steeper ascents and more daily ups and downs than the Marangu or Rongai routes. This makes it physically demanding, but it also aids acclimatization. You should be in good physical condition and prepared for long days of hiking. The Barranco Wall provides a fun, non-technical scrambling challenge.

You will be sleeping in high-quality, four-season mountain tents. Our team will set up and take down the tents for you at each campsite. You will have a sleeping mat, but you need to provide your own sleeping bag (or rent one from us). Meals are served in a dedicated dining tent with tables and chairs. While it's more rustic than the huts on Marangu, many find it a more authentic mountain experience.

The Barranco Wall is a famous and exciting part of the trek. While it looks intimidating, it is not a technical rock climb and does not require any special equipment. It's a 1.5-hour scramble where you will use your hands and feet to navigate the rock face. Our guides are experts at leading climbers up the wall safely. Most people find it to be a fun and memorable challenge.

As the most popular route, Machame can be busy, especially during the peak climbing seasons (January-March and June-October). You will share the trails and campsites with other groups. While this creates a great sense of camaraderie, if you are looking for a more solitary experience, you might consider the Lemosho (for its quiet start) or Rongai routes.
