Itinerary

The 3-day Mount Meru trek is a fast-paced ascent offering spectacular scenery, including a thrilling ridge walk to the summit. Because the lower slopes are located within Arusha National Park, you will likely see abundant wildlife. This itinerary is physically demanding, especially the final day which involves a midnight summit push followed by a full descent to the park gate.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500m to 2,500m | Distance: 10 km / 6 miles | Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest | Meals included: Lunch and dinner

You will be driven to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park to complete the registration formalities. The trek begins through the lush forest, where you may spot giraffes, elephants, and buffaloes. An armed park ranger will accompany you. The trail ascends steadily to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,500m to 3,500m | Distance: 8 km / 5 miles | Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Moorland | Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

The trail climbs steeply up the ridge to Saddle Hut. The forest gradually thins out, offering stunning views of the Meru Crater and the Ash Cone. In the afternoon, you can take a short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for beautiful sunset views of Kilimanjaro. Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and rest.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit to Momella Gate

Elevation: 3,500m to 4,566m to 1,500m | Distance: 27 km / 17 miles | Time: 12-14 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert / Moorland / Forest | Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Wake up at midnight for a light breakfast before beginning the final push to the summit. The trail is steep and involves scrambling over rocks along the crater rim. Reach Socialist Peak (4,566m) just in time for a breathtaking sunrise over Kilimanjaro. Descend back to Saddle Hut for a hot brunch, then continue the long descent all the way to Momella Gate, where you will be transferred back to your hotel.
